12 Days of Christmas - Day 3

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6
The baby in the manger is not only full of wisdom (as a counselor); He is also full of power. Jesus is a Mighty God. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is something about power that allures us. There is something about power that we enjoy. Whether we’re watching Shaquille O’Neal at 7 feet 2 inches and 335 pounds dunk a basketball or riding on a Harley Davidson, there is something about power that attracts us. The power of Jesus Christ is attracting, it’s alluring and we should stand awestruck at our Mighty God. How does Jesus demonstrate His power?
- He demonstrates His power over creation. The Bible says in John 1:3 that,
“through Jesus all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.”
In other words, had it not been for the mighty power of Jesus nothing would have been created. We also read in Colossian 1:16-17,
“For by Him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Let me break those verses down for you. Jesus created everything. Jesus existed before anything was ever created so in the beginning He is the source of creation. In the end, He is the goal of creation. All things were created by Him and FOR Him. And then on top of all that, in between the beginning and the end, Jesus holds everything together. That’s power! William Barclay comments,
“All the laws by which this world is in order and not in chaos are an expression of the mind of Christ. The law of gravity and all the so called scientific laws are not only scientific laws; they are divine laws.”
The baby in the manger is the Maker of the Milky Way. Those little hands hung the stars in place. He created light and communicates life. He raised the heavens above the earth and holds all things together. That’s the power of our Mighty God, Jesus!
- He demonstrates power over nature. A beautiful story in Mark’s Gospel illustrates this for us. In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus was asleep on a boat when a furious storm hits. Completely afraid, the disciples awaken Jesus who calmly tells the wind to die down and the waves to subside. The bible says the furious squall turned completely calm. The disciples were left scratching their heads wondering what kind of man has this kind of power. Jesus does. He’s a mighty God.
- He demonstrates power over death. One day Jesus was walking in a town called Nain. As he approached the town Jesus sees a funeral procession. A young boy had died and the mother was mourning her son. Jesus touched the coffin the young boy was in and commanded the young boy to get up. The dead boy sat up and began to talk and he was given back to his mother. That’s power!
- He demonstrates power over Satan. Read Luke 8:27-39.
Jesus’ power is for you. Reverence Jesus as being all powerful and rest in the refuge of His power.
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
